Who We Are
We are the Glasgow University E. Steampunk Society, or GUESS for short. Not to be confused with the Glasgow University Earth Science Society who do something entirely different. We are a newly formed and ambitious Clutch (the collective noun for Steampunks) who all have varied interests within the areas of Steampunk and Victoriana, welcoming any and all individuals who may have similar (or entirely different) views on the subject matter, because it is more fun that way. To please as many of our members as we can we run a variety of events, we hold monthly film nights and pub outings which range from drinking to drinking while answering questions to drinking in different cities, we also hold a couple of crafting events a month for our members to pass on useful skills, show off Steampunketry that they have made or just for some company while performing monotonous tasks. Click here for up coming events.
We also organise larger scale events around Glasgow. Currently in the steam-pipeline is a Victoriana and Steampunk themed ball which will be thrown in April and, in the Summer, another round or two of Glasgow By Gaslight. Not to be confused this time with the Batman comic, this is our very successful music hall show held in conjunction with the Britannia Panopticon which was very well received last year.
As our name suggests we are based in Glasgow, focused around the University but we are willing to take on members from anywhere. If you are interested and would like any more information contact us or attend one of our events, or if you are interested but think that Glasgow is a bit far have a look at our friends and see if we know anyone that are in your area.
What is this "Steampunk" you speak of?
Steampunk means many things to many people, mostly these opinions are different and not particularly useful. Wikipedia runs with:
The term denotes works set in an era or world where steam power is still widely used &minus usually the 19th century, and often Victorian era England &minus but with prominent elements of either science fiction or fantasy, such as fictional technological inventions like those found in the works of H. G. Wells and Jules Verne, or real technological developments like the computer occurring at an earlier date.
This definition seems broad enough to appease most Steamy Punks but individuals, as with all areas of life worth taking an interest in, will have their own views on what makes things Steamy.
